In July, 2007, David Bell read about the latest of tragic news stories involving infants or children left behind in vehicles. This story involved a father heading to work in the North Bay Area, who intended to drop his infant by the daycare on the way, only to get sidetracked by early business calls. It was the first time in a week he had child drop-off duty. The daycare called him at 11am to say that his wife mentioned that he would be dropping off the baby, today. It was already too late.

David decided upon reading this story that there had to be a way to end this series of tragedies, which would only get worse given the ever increasing chaos of modern life. The unfortunate habits we all are developing, including our constant attachment to cell phones, seem to turn our well-intentioned priorities upside down.

David set out to resolve how to effectively force a change in our driving habits, as the simple use of everyday items such as toys, purses, brief cases, etc, didn’t stand the “21 day rule” which conveys how difficult it is to truly change a habit. These everyday items were not intended to be used for such an important purpose, and such familiarity and attachment with other tasks makes them extremely fallible for actually changing a habit.

As he tested possible solutions, David chanced upon the idea, “what if the same object were visible to the outside?” thereby creating an additional active symbol to passersby that “there really is a baby in back, right now” (not simply the ever present baby-on-board sticker which is in the window 24 hours a day). The habit of using the VizKID™ would also be reinforced every time he or she saw another VizKID™ drive by.

The product would need to be visible enough on the adjacent passenger seat, yet stable enough to stand up in ordinary driving, while being composed of a soft foam to act as more of a cushion than a projectile, and be resilient in the intense heat of a vehicle. 2+ years later, VisibleKIDS introduced the VizKID™ to parents and other drivers of infants and children, with no less passion than when Mr. Bell began the journey.
